But in that it is also misguided because it's based on the last century's ideals. The age of superpowers has already started waning and the future does belong to networks of nations/communities that think alike--like the Commonwealth, or its inner core of English-speaking countries.
I wouldn't worry about the threat the EU poses. When you consider the democratic stresses that it is under from inside the Eurozone, it is most likely the project will come to an end in less than 20 years, finished like all other failed European attempts to bring the continent under the rule of one state. It might not be apparent at the moment, but the EU is slowly beginning to resemble the Soviet Union in its last decades, trying deperately to tighten its centralized noose before it all fell apart... The original idea of the ...I respectfully disagree. The original idea of the Commonwealth was a set of locally-governing communities with a common citizenship and a common allegiance to the crown.

Since the allowing India to continue membership as a republic in 1950, the organisation has changed beyond this vision into a loose, well-meaning but low-impact organisation. However, it is inconceivable that the organisation as it stands will ever have common citizenship.

The early Commonweath was manageable: Australia, Canada, Newfoundland, New Zealand, South Africa (with a limited franchise) and the UK. (I exclude Eire. Also note that many of these countries had seperate colonial posessions/LoN mandates.)

The countries on that list still have excellent relations and similar cultural and social attributes. However, there is no structure that allows for common discussion seperately from The Commonwealth.

An updated "Commonwealth" including Canada Australia New Zealand, the UK and certain West Indian countries is a very appealing idea. Have common citizenship, freedom of movement, loyalty to the crown as a basis and have a forum for further discussion on foreign and security matters.

What it could be called, I don't know. However, such an initiative would certainly make sense.Pnoreply@blogger.com
