"Colonial Hangovers"

Here's another interesting living remnant of Empire, otherwise known as a "colonial hangover" if you're a republican. If you happen to live in London, and you're from South Africa, Australia, New Zealand or Canada, you can still come across these weekly publications that cover news and events back home. I took a photo of this newsstand just outside of Paddington Station last week.

    Shame you missed the Polish / Russian / German / French newstand which, from memory, is just a short stroll down where this pic was taken.

    Why a shame? As Poland, Russia, Germany, and France were never colonies of the UK, they're not "hangovers" to be ashamed of. Is that not the current republican thinking?

    Ironically, I just heard a comment somewhere basically stating that Rednecks were the ones in Canada that still wanted the Monarchy, which is quite erroneous, I thought they were more of the republican brand...

    Guess that is part of the hangover also, anyone who does not want to eliminate the monarchy is a unintelligent 'redneck'.

    You can obviously pick up European dailies just about anywhere in London, but the same cannot be said for the old dominions. The papers above are not domestic newspapers, just weekly summaries of what the papers back home are saying. I wonder if that's what Lewis saw in the Polish/Russian/German/French stand?

    TM - yes I am. Usually the non-Commonwealth stands are right next to the Commonwealth ones. I doubt they'd have a free Polish paper on what's going on in the UK.
