SIR JOHN A. MACDONALD, FATHER OF CANADIAN CONFEDERATION
The old Tory and flamboyant Scotchman who's greatest achievement was to unite the colonies of British North America into a single polity and become the first Prime Minister of the Dominion of Canada in 1867.
Memorable Quote: "A British subject I was born, a British subject I will die"
I liked Lord Black's observation that Sir John A. was the most successful North American statesman during a long period of lacklustre presidents between Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt.
ReplyDeleteNo one now uses the term "Scotchman" today unless he intends to be insulting. An odd way to show your respect for Canada's first (and greatest) PM.
ReplyDeleteAnyway he wasn't a Scotsman, having arrived in Upper Canada at age 5. He was an Upper Canadian.
