While this scene may raise a chuckle north of the border (and perhaps south of it), I would venture any former member of this regiment would rightfully feel their reputations to have been sullied by this taudry and film!
Which is a crying shame, surely given the material to work with, any half decent screen writer could have penned a classic war film.
While the contrast between Canuck and Yank is quite humorous and not too far off target, this was a very mediocre film. William Holden was much too old for the role. The dialog was wooden, the screenplay horrendous, and the long awaited combat scene rather poorly staged and boring. Don't waste your time hunting this one down.
By the way, one that I have only recently seen is The Man Who Never Was ca. 1956. Set in WWII, this is not an action film but one for those who like "attention to details". Great British film making from the golden years.
This was on t.v. here in Sydney a few months ago. It was so corny and trite I couldn't watch all of it. Even William Holden and Cliff Robertson (who affected a deplorable Scottish-Canadian accent) couldn't save it. So if bad-to-mediocre war movies from the 1960s are to your liking, The Devil's Brigade is probably right up your alley.
Gotta love it! A bunch of unruly yanks being put to shame by His Majesty's Canadian troops. "God Save The King, God save us all", indeed.
ReplyDeleteClassic!
ReplyDeleteOh dear, that has wet my appetite, now I must find the rest of the film to watch.
ReplyDeleteGood clip though, show the lot of em up eh?
