Her Majesty reflects on the Monarchy

From the 1970's documentary Elizabeth R, Her Majesty talks for a rare ten minutes about her own conception of Monarchy: what it is for, and her job.

Shining through is the woman; decent, conservative with a small c, impartial and conscientious — Our Sovereign continues to rock my socks.

  1. Good find, Swift. Since Her Majesty has never granted a media interview, this is about as close as we are going to get to one, and about as close as we should want to get. No further please, that's far enough.

  2. Yes, quite right.

A monologue is enough--but I thought it was a nice one--same sense I get from the Christmas Speech every year.

  3. Very nice, I agree.

By the way, is this really a 1970s documentary, or a 1990s one? I am in some doubt when I see John Major strolling along with Her Majesty, though this could be a more recent film transposed on the 1970s monologue.

  4. How can anyone be a Republican after watching that?

  5. You're right, of course. I confused Elizabeth R with the earlier "The Royal Family"

And Kipling, I have no idea.

  6. I envy every single member of The Commonwealth for having such an admirable Head of State. How could anyone prefer a fickle republic to the benign rule of Elizabeth II?
