On 14 August 1946 King George conferred upon Sir Winston Churchill the ancient honor of appointment as Lord Warden and Admiral of the Cinque Ports. Above Churchill inspects a line of soldiers at his installation ceremony as the new Lord Warden and Constable of Dover Castle at Dover Kent.
Sir Robert Menzies followed in Churchill's footsteps, and was Lord Warden from 1965 to his death in 1978 - the only Australian - indeed the only British subject outside of Britain to be granted the high honour, one of the highest honour the Sovereign can bestow.
ReplyDeleteIt is so illustrious that members of the royal family have held the post, including the Queen Mother who followed Menzies until her death in 2002.
Yes, very illustrious indeed. Pitt, Wellington, Palmerston and Curzon have all held the highly esteemed honour. All grand protectors of the British Empire.
