His Imperial Majesty King Edward The Seventh in Coronation Robes
As Barbara Tuchman described in The Guns of August, the funeral of Edward VII marked "the greatest assemblage of royalty and rank ever gathered in one place and, of its kind, the last". The reign of "the Peacemaker" arguably represents the high water mark of civilisation, which came to a crashing and inglorious end all across Christian Europe soon after his death. Old Bertie famously had a girth the size of Humpty Dumpty; alas, all we king's men and all the king's horses haven't (yet) been able to put King Eddy back together again.

The sad part is, we think of our cultural decline and ultimate disintegration as "Progress". Now that all women are whores and all men are exploitive, manners are to be mocked, course language flls each lip, and we live in the Politics of hand me other peopels money for what I want now, we seem to think we're at a higher state.

ReplyDeleteI highly recommend that you (if you haven't already) read G.K. Chesterton's 'Heretics' and 'What's Wrong with the World'. In both those works he talks about the phenomenon of immoral, unorthodox people thinking they are superior and have reached new levels of sophistication and progress. Reality of course, teaches us the opposite.
Vive le Roi!
I will take you up on that.
ReplyDeleteI don't think you're serious about any of this. Just my opinion. And the reason I don't think you're serious is that you only tell the side of the story which Officialdom promotes -- not the real story in any case.

Then perhaps Emily, you might enlighten us, especially if you are related (as your name would appear to indicate).
