The Grenadier Guards is the most senior regiment of the Guards Division of the British Army, and, as such, is the most senior regiment of infantry. Originally raised in 1656 by the exiled king, Charles II, they are the only regiment in the British Army to win its name in battle, having defeated the Grenadiers of the French Imperial Guard at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

In her speech at the event, Her Majesty spoke of the 'immense debt of gratitude and sympathy' owed by the country to soldiers who had been injured or lost their lives in conflict.
