7 comments:
Norfolk house was most likely the London home, or site at least, of the Dukes of Norfolk; indeed many noblemen had their London homes St James's Square until before the 2nd World War.
"With so many spacious private clubs around, it is a wonder how so many Members of Parliament would rather rip off the taxpayer with expensive London mortgages rather than live in temporary affordable comfort at a traditional gentlemen's club."
The problem with your logic is that you assume a preponderance of gentlemen who are also MPs. Gentlemen's clubs are for gentlemen.
Norfolk House [is] where General Dwight D. Eisenhower planned Operation's Torch and Overlord and directed the largest amphibious assault in military history.
It might be pointed out that, despite self-congratulating American legend, Eisenhower had virtually nothing to do with either the planning or the execution of D-Day, both of which tasks were left to Field-Marshal (then General) Montgomery and his staff.
There is a long forgotten special link between Lady Astor and Canada...
...although her views on our "D-Day Dodgers" are still quite fresh.
Rather bad form to be taking photos inside the club, isn't it?
How did you feel the In and Out compared with the Carlton (you stayed there for a night, yes)? Presumably because the In&Out has an arrangement with the Carlton to accommodate people on weekends? Some of the other London clubs have those arrangements with each other.
When I am in London I stay at either the Turf Club (Carlton House Terrace - Wills and Harry are members now), or the O&C (if I am with the "boss").
You can already find some of these online, or on the website, but I wouldn't recommend taking photos if members are around, which is usually during the week. You will find Sundays to be a particularly quiet time at the clubs, when its possible to wander discretely.
In Canada, the term "gentlemen's club" means a bar with strippers!
